Mumbai is a cosmopolitan city with varied cultural societies. It is a city of contrast; a blend of old and new. Mumbaikars belong to diverse ethnic and social backgrounds. People try to follow the celebrity lifestyle as they belong to the ‘Film City of India’. They participate in every occasion irrespective of castes and religions.

Mumbai is the birth place of Indian Cinema. The city boosts a large number of film theatres, including Asia's largest IMAX dome theatre. Cultural activities like dance and music have maximum importance in the city. The city is a dwelling place for India’s top singers and musicians. This inspirational force makes them get into training of mainstream music and dance of different genres at tender ages. Training in Ballroom, Latin American, Kathak, Bharat Natyam, Folk, Bollywood Dhamaka, Creative Dance Hip Hop, Breakdance are on in full swing at Mumbai.

Since the past decade or so, the best known, award-winning choreographers of Bollywood have come further to share their talent and skills with the commoners of Mumbai. Artists like Saroj Khan and Shiamak Davar are generously parting knowledge to dance enthusiasts in the city, particularly the youngsters.

These days, professional schools of music giving lessons in guitar, piano, keyboard and voice have come up in almost every locality of Mumbai. There are also plenty of classical music training centres in the city that nurture the abilities of the present generation.

Youngsters with incredible amounts of musical talent that is honed by renowned Indian musicians and singers like Suresh Wadkar and Hariharan can be seen participating in musical and talent hunt shows held in Mumbai and broadcasted on national channels.

The most prestigious such school of classical music in Mumbai is the Shamukhananda Sangeet Sabha; others like Bhartiya Academy at Matunga and the Fine Arts Society at Chembur are also active in passing on musical awareness to novices. Mumbai is a hotbed of rich classical and international performing arts and a multitude of dance and music shows and festivals are held here to a more than encouraging attendance every year.
